April 11, 2018: We shared how we each celebrated Easter. We learned the Good News we are called to share.. Jesus is Risen. The Resurrection is the most important part of our faith. Understanding that Jesus died on the cross took our sins down to hell, left them there and rose from the dead and then went to heaven is a big idea. Jesus, our Savior, cleared a path for us to follow him and live forever is God showing His love for us. We also touched on the idea of original sin, Adam and Eve were tempted and made a bad choice.
March 21, 2018: We reviewed what we learned about Lent then talked about the big upcoming week. We all took part in a Palm Sunday procession in the hallway after drawing and decorating the palm frond and writing words like "victory". Next we sat together and read from the children's Bible story of Jesus entering the city of Jerusalem and ended when Jesus went up into heaven. We talked about the Last Supper, the washing of the disciples feet, Good Friday, and Easter. Jesus is Risen and we can rise to heaven because of it! Happy Easter! Alleluia!
March 14, 2018: We reviewed Lent this week and the idea of servanthood. Jesus is the strongest King ever but he acted as a servant in His life and when He washed His friends' feet. We, as followers of Jesus, are disciples who will be helpers and servants to others. We washed each other's hands and made cards for people who are shut in. Our disciple group did their best work!
March 7, 2018: The Holy Spirit is our guide and gives us gifts to help us. God the Holy Spirit teaches us and reminds us of our faith. We can love and follow God by being kind to others and help in little ways every day.
February 7, 2018: We learned about Noah this week! We got to hear the story of the great flood that washed away everything on earth, and learned about God's love and His promise to us, which we can remember every time we see a rainbow. We also got to watch Fantasia 2000 and see Donald Duck play Noah!
January 31, 2018: We so enjoyed getting to share a meal, learn, and praise God with you last night at our First Grade Family Night!
January 24, 2018: Jesus went to every town and village, teaching and healing. He looked for His people to have faith. Jesus did His miracles to show people His love and God's power. Mother Teresa was a person of faith, now a saint, who helped God's people with a smile, holding a hand and caring for ill people in India. Prayer is a way to have faith and ask for God's help and healing. Faith is believing in God.
January 17, 2018: Our First Graders Rock! We learned that Jesus used parables, or stories, to teach us about God's love. We read God's word from the Book of Luke in the Bible, the Parable of the Lost Sheep. We were so into it! We talked about how Jesus is the shepherd in the story and we, His people, are the sheep. The Shepherd Jesus will always look after us, and if we get lost He will always find us, watch over us, and love us. He will battle for us and never give up on us. It was great to color and make our own books of the story, the kids took turns telling me the story from their book. We also re-enacted a play of the parable. The kids especially liked when I reminded them that Jesus the shepherd sees their parents as children and sheep too, and takes care of them. There is so much love and care in their hearts.
December 13, 2017: Today we got to participate in being a part of the scene of baby Jesus coming to the manger. We also sang "Hark the Herald Angels Sing!"
Merry Christmas from First Grade!
December 6, 2017: Today in class, we reviewed our Advent lesson. We colored our wreaths, some more creatively than the 3 purple candles and 1 pink, all were beautiful. It was great to have a visit from St Nick, one of God's holy people that took care of others. It was especially fun to get gold chocolate coins and candy in their shoes.
We read from a children's bible about the Christmas story's good news. We reviewed that God's people were waiting on the promise of a Savior. We read verses from the book of Isaiah, Old Testament, that confirmed our Savior was coming as God promised. We read from the book of Luke in the New Testament about Mary talking with the angel Gabriel about the news she'd be expecting a baby that would be called Jesus. We reviewed other holy people from the Good News story like Elizabeth, Mary's cousin and mother of John the Baptist. We talked about Joseph being called to Bethlehem, Jesus being born in a stable there. The shepherds hearing the good news "that our savior was born" were scared but the angels told them "calm down". We talked about the bright star the wise men followed and terrible King Herod that didn't want Jesus or anyone else to be King.
Most of the kids said it was their first time hearing this story so if anyone has a children's bible at home they may want to hear it again. It was fun to see their interest in the Good News. We're grateful for your kids, Jean and Renee'
November 29, 2017: Our lesson this week was about the Advent season. We talked about how we have different emotions (like excitement, happiness, and nervousness) as we wait for something big. (Sometimes annoyance and boredom too, out of the mouths of babes.) We also talked about how we prepare for something coming. Advent is our time to prepare and hopefully focus on being excited about Christmas. Advent is 4 weeks long and we focus on Hope (Week 1), Peace (Week 2), Joy (Week 3), and Love (week 4) as we prepare to celebrate Jesus' birth at Christmas. We made an Advent wreath to help us remember our lesson.
November 17, 2017: We learned about the Holy Family...Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We learned family is a gift from God and we are called to help one another. We learned Jesus is God's son, is part of God but lived as a human just like us. He had a family, played, ate, obeyed and lived like us but no sin. He is our role model. We give thanks to God for family.
November 8, 2017: We learned the word Trinity and practiced the sign of the cross. We read the fable of the Mouse and the Lion and talked about different vocations and how they can help people. Each student talked about someone who has died that they would like to pray for in a special way this month.
October 25, 2017: We reviewed ALL SAINTS DAY, a day to honor God's holy people. God gave us role models, real people who have lived throughout history. They lived lives following God's commands. We talked about St Francis of Assisi, who had a special care for animals and St Father Solanus Casey who lived in Wisconsin. We had all heard of Wisconsin. We reviewed the idea of Communion of Saints and made banners of ourselves as saints. We worked on Chapter 3, God gave us gifts. Our big idea is: God gave His people the gift to creatively think and make choices. No other thing in creation can do this. Saying thank you God is giving him thanksgiving.
October 11, 2017: We reviewed that God gave us the whole world to show us his love. God knew we'd get creative with the gifts he gave us like making pancakes from flour and maple syrup from tree sap. The greatest gift he gave us is his Son, Jesus. We give thanksgiving and praise to God for the gifts he gives us.
October 4, 2017: God formed us, loves us and knows us including every hair on our head. (Luke 12:7) God created us to know him and love him and to share that love with others. Big Idea..Everything God made, including people, is called CREATION! We talked about the 1st people, Adam and his partner Eve.
September 27: Welcome...from Ms Jean and Ms Renee, 1st grade catechists We started off talking about things we have in common like birthdays and things we like. We also have in common that we are coming to church school on Wednesdays to learn more about our faith. We will pray, read bible stories, do art and a bit of singing and dancing. We plan to learn more about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, our church and each other. Growing in faith, and have fun doing it will be our aim. Today, we talked Jesus being the way, the truth and the life. There is no map to God or heaven but Jesus and the teachings God shares with us will lead us there. We referenced that google maps won't take us there. We talked about the bible, God's book, full of people and stories to help us live the life God hopes for us. There is an OLD and NEW testament. The OLD is before Jesus teachings and the NEW teaches us about Jesus and his followers. We also talked about our special CATHOLIC PRAYER... the sign of the cross and when we say AMEN, it means we agree with the prayer and send it right to GOD. We said AMEN, really loud a few times, which was fun and a great enthusiastic start to our year. God bless our 1st grade class, our families and our DOF school. AMEN!
